Continued from Graduate Fashion Week (Part 1):
3rd Place: Brona Smith presents an interesting mixture of classical and new silhouettes. It is hard to reach a happy medium in this combination but I think she achieves one.
Kingston University:
2nd Place: Mark Williams’s strong colors and large shoulders scream power and give these otherwise very feminine silhouettes a boost. I love his fur hats which remind me of British Guards.
1st Place: l love this collection by Siwen Jian. The draping and use of gathering is astounding and I cannot get over the bustled tulle skirt on the right.
UCA Rochester:
3rd Place: Lucy Wild’s collection is reminiscent of futuristic movies. With body suits and nude tones she achieves a very sporty look.
2nd Place: Although I am not normally a fan of menswear collections, Nana Brew does it so well I had to give her credit. Her asymmetrical looks are fresh and her long suits remind me of the 1940’s.
1st Place: Faye De Booder is meant to design in Harajuku. With campy looks, bright colors, and the blow up bubbles this is one collection I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
The Arts University College of Bournemouth:
1st Place: Meg Cornwell’s use of abstract patterns and attention grabbing pieces such as the jacket in the middle are very well done. She gives new twists to blouses and the baby-doll dress.
Nottingham Trent University:
2nd Place: I like Anneleise Hatt’s collection because of its clean, mature silhouettes and its excellent use of laser cutting. I also very much enjoyed her finishing touch of the butterfly over each model’s mouth.
1st Place: Kristabel Plummer’s use of knits is fabulous and she achieves a vibrant tone which is not always seen in this medium.
At GFW they also feature some International Students through the International show. Here are some of the highlights:
2nd Place: Mia Budiman from Lasalle, a school in Montreal, has excellent control of her mediums and she really knows how to flatter the wearer.
1st Place: Christina Economou from Marangoni Paris was my favorite in the International show. Her use of the blue checkered fabric to highlight certain aspects of her looks is spectacular.
Manchester School of Art:
1st place: Olivia Hewitt’s fresh use of vibrant stripes combined with ornate frocks is innovative and new.
Salisbury College:
2nd Place: Belinda Dunger’s use of fine materials as well as more neutral colors creates a classic yet sleek look.
1st Place: I love the Old Hollywood feel in Raj Shinji’s collection. With some ramped-up prints and stylish sunglasses this collection stood out.
So, that’s all folks. Unfortunately, due to lack of accessible photographs these choices were made only on what was available to me. Maybe someday I’ll get to attend GFW and see everyone’s full collections.
My favorite from what I’ve seen is Harriet Deva Ferris’s:
I just can’t get over the shapes and colors.
Thanks for reading! One last image for the road:
